As the month of November brings lung cancer into focus it’s important to note the great strides that have recently been made in the management of non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) largely due to the advancement of precision cancer medicines and immunotherapy.

Lung cancer remains the second most common cancer in women (behind breast cancer) and also the second most common in men (behind prostate cancer). In 2023, there will be over 225,000 individuals diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States.
The treatment of lung cancer is rapidly evolving. To derive the most benefit from recent advances individuals diagnosed with lung cancer need to have their treatment planned and coordinated by a multidisciplinary team including the surgeon, and medical oncologist. Many patients will derive the most benefit when chemo-immunotherapy is begun BEFORE surgery and its extremely important that molecular testing of the cancer be performed on both the tumor tissue and blood to identify the best treatment.
