Every year, thousands of cancer researchers and doctors gather at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) to share the latest discoveries in cancer care. This year’s meeting brought encouraging news for people affected by breast cancer, with new research focused on personalized treatments, promising therapies, and improving quality of life.
1. Some Patients May Be Able to Skip Chemotherapy
One of the biggest studies presented at ASCO, called the OPTIMA trial, suggests that many patients with early-stage, hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer may not need chemotherapy, even if they have features that traditionally place them at higher risk.
Researchers used a genomic test called Prosigna, which examines the biology of a tumor to estimate the likelihood of recurrence. The study found that nearly 70% of patients who were considered clinically high risk actually had a low genomic risk and did just as well with hormone therapy alone.
This is important because avoiding unnecessary chemotherapy can spare patients from side effects such as fatigue, nausea, nerve damage, and long-term health complications.
2. Could GLP-1 Medications Influence Cancer Risk?
Medications such as semaglutide (Ozempic® and Wegovy®) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro® and Zepbound®) have received significant attention for treating obesity and diabetes. Researchers are now investigating whether these medications could also affect cancer risk.
At ASCO, one large study found that women with obesity who took GLP-1 medications had a lower incidence of breast cancer compared with women who did not take these drugs. Another study suggested that patients with several obesity-related cancers, including breast cancer, were less likely to develop metastatic disease while taking GLP-1 medications.
However, these studies were observational, meaning they cannot prove that the medications directly prevent cancer or improve outcomes. More research is needed before doctors can recommend GLP-1 medications specifically for cancer prevention or treatment.
3. New Hope for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) can be particularly difficult to treat because it lacks several common treatment targets. Fortunately, several studies presented at ASCO offered encouraging news.
Researchers reported promising results from new targeted therapies called antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). These medications deliver cancer-fighting drugs directly to tumor cells while limiting damage to healthy tissues.
Studies involving medications such as:
- Sacituzumab govitecan (Trodelvy®)
- Datopotamab deruxtecan (Datroway®)
- Iza-bren, an experimental therapy
showed improvements in progression-free survival and may offer additional treatment options for patients with metastatic TNBC.
Researchers also continue to explore ways to make immunotherapy more effective, including combining immunotherapy with radiation treatment.
4. Advances in Hormone Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer
For patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, researchers presented promising data on a new class of medications called oral selective estrogen receptor degraders (SERDs).
Two medications in particular, camizestrant and giredestrant, showed encouraging results in clinical trials by delaying cancer progression, lowering the risk of recurrence, and potentially causing fewer side effects than some current endocrine therapies. These treatments may eventually provide new options for patients whose cancers develop resistance to standard hormone therapy.
5. Artificial Intelligence Is Entering the Clinic
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a valuable tool in cancer care.
Researchers demonstrated that AI may help doctors:
- Predict which patients could benefit from chemotherapy
- Identify patients at higher risk for developing brain metastases
- Analyze pathology slides more efficiently
While these technologies are still being refined, they have the potential to make breast cancer care even more personalized and proactive in the future.
What Does This Mean for Patients?
The research presented at ASCO 2026 highlights an important trend in breast cancer care: treatments are becoming increasingly personalized. Doctors are learning how to identify which therapies will work best for each individual patient while reducing unnecessary treatments and side effects.
Although many of these findings still require additional study before becoming standard practice, they offer hope for more effective and tailored treatments in the years ahead.
